Thursday photo: Red Rocks.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. I like the swirly lines made by the seat supports. And the clouds. And the red rocks. It’s a great place if you don’t mind the complete lack of oxygen and hordes of crazy people running up and down the stairs and across the aisles because they have nothing [...]

Week in preview.

After a post-graduation week of Nashville vacation-type activities, it’s time to get back to work. Or at least something resembling work. I’m still making my way through story revisions and sending stories out into the void. Also reading submissions for Nashville Review (if you have a story to send, send it).
In other week-beginning news, I [...]

Catching up, music and readings.

I saw The Swell Season (the duo from the movie “Once,” plus some band support) at The Ryman Auditorium on Tuesday night. The Ryman is definitely worth all the fuss–it was built as a tabernacle/church in 1892, and reopened in 1994 after serving as home to Grand Ole Opry broadcasts from the 1940s to 1970s. [...]

May music.

I’m looking forward to making May into Music Month. No more school, a short time before job searching becomes urgent, and a lot of reasonably priced live music options nearby.
Well, mostly reasonable. I’m going to see The Swell Season at the Ryman Auditorium, which ain’t cheap, but I think that’s a good act to see [...]

Station Inn pilgrimage.

I’ve been trying to get to The Station Inn all year. It’s one of those Nashville spots you’re supposed to seek out. Even Gwyneth says so. This is serious business. Everyone says, “Go see The Time Jumpers on Monday night! Time Jumpers! Time Jumpers!”
So just about every week I’ve been telling myself I’d make [...]

Record Store Day, music.

In celebration of Record Store Day, I thought I’d post a couple Liam Finn clips. I found out about Finn at a past Record Store Day when I grapped his EP out of a stack of free stuff. Thank you to Grimey’s, my favorite record store in Nashville, which sits atop The Basement, my favorite [...]

String things.

What a quick week! I spent most of my time playing tour guide for new recruits, trying to convince them to come here next year. My number one reason: the Parthenon. How could you turn down a city with a perfect (and I’m employing a loose definition of “perfect”) replica of the Parthenon? You couldn’t. [...]

Art daze.

I completed the final version of my thesis this weekend, and during one of my procrastination breaks I found a couple videos I thought I’d share. Here’s a kid named Sungha Jung jamming on his guitar. I went in search of classical music clips — that’s what I’ve been listening too lately, and that’s how [...]
