About
Welcome aboard. My name is Alex.
I write fiction, mostly short stories, but I like creative nonfiction, too. In August 2008 I started my first semester in a graduate creative writing program. I spent eleven years in a cubicle and my goal is to never return to the corporate world. What are the odds? Not good. Will the academic/writerly world offer any more peace or satisfaction? I have no idea.
MoodyTunes is a place for me to blow off steam, toss out some ideas, and share what I’m thinking about…it really could go just about anywhere. I know that violates one of the main rules of blogging (”Pick a topic!”) but so be it.
Here are some essays and stories I wrote:
An essay about life on a sailboat, called Shiny Happy Pirate, for FRESH YARN.
An essay called The Harmonics of Bees, for the “First Person” section at A Prairie Home Companion.
A short story that was printed in the Beaufort County Art Council’s ArtNews magazine, in response to a call for short fiction based on a particular place in the county. I chose to write about a spot I like on St. Helena Island. The story is called The Warning.
If flash fiction is your thing (I like it), Endure showed up on Six Sentences.
I’m also testing the screenwriting waters with the fine bunch at Jake Leg Films.
You can find me on Facebook, a favorite pastime of procrastinators everywhere.
You can e-mail me but please feel free to comment on posts that catch your fancy. I enjoy reading the spontaneous discussions that pop up around here. Your first comment, or any comment with a link, will be moderated. Other than that you’re home free.
If you’d like to get a feel for how things normally go around here, I have some suggestions. These posts will catch you up:
Ever had Peeps take over your house on a Sunday morning?
I like music. It’s therapy and it puts me in the right state of mind for writing. Check out One of those deja vu things or Hard to imagine. You’ll note a lot of Pearl Jam craziness. I’ll also be documenting my forays into the Nashville music scene.
We had a great discussion about Martin Luther King, Jr.
I’ll miss Sean Taylor.
Ignorance upsets me.
If you made it this far, wow! Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy the posts.
