2009, a brief review.

I thought about what to write for a year-end post and realized that the academic calendar puts me more in the mood for year-end musings in May, rather than December. When I tried to figure out which events in 2009 felt important I kept thinking of my road trip through Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, and Georgia in May. I had just finished Year 1 of the great MFA project, all the term papers were typed up and handed in, and that’s when the significance of the 2008-2009 happenings started to become clear. I set out to explore places like New Orleans and Apalachicola, and my wanderings turned into a surprisingly quiet, peaceful trip in which time started to slow down and I could decompress.

There are other events, accomplishments, projects that could show up here, I guess, but that week in May is what I want to remember right now for 2009. If 2010 offers the same level of satisfaction, I’ll be a lucky guy.

Now if you’ll pardon me, I’m off to look at some of the photos on Flickr. (New Orleans, then Florida.)

Here are a few from May 6:

Great beach break.
Destin beach.
Interesting building near the Apalachicola docks.
Cool building.
Mossy marina railing.
