Be a good boy. It’s only for a little while.

I used to try to lock my dog, Harrison, in a spare room when guests came over. He’s annoying when there’s food out. The dining room is tiny, so everyone usually eats in the living room. Harrison will sit next to his victim, put on his most earnest “I haven’t eaten in 4 weeks and [...]

Speed freaks.

Ever since I arrived in Nashville I’ve been wondering what they put in the water here. My standard guess was Prozac. Everyone seems so gosh darned happy. Or motivated. Or something. It’s incredibly annoying. One of the things I was most looking forward to in moving from small town to city was the presumed reduction [...]

Another Nashville park…(now with 100% more spooky tree).

…this one is called Percy Warner Park and it’s close to town. I drove through Belle Meade, a neighborhood full of mansions and important people, to get there. I’ll only post pictures of the park. The important people were in their workout clothes and that’s not a pretty sight.
A side note: Not much traffic on [...]

Alien beings.

The university’s daycare center is across the street from my apartment (yes, I realize the school itself is a daycare center…very funny). On most afternoons there are 8-12 kids out in the play area, which is surrounded by a big fence and filled with toys and standard, brightly colored miniature playground equipment.
I know kids [...]

Don’t lose focus, people. It’s all about Botox.

I laughed at the sequence of Tuesday morning headlines on CNN.com:
“Stock losses grow.”
“Headphones sound superb.”
“Botox may cure migraines.”
First off, the concept of growing losses befuddles me. We are losing things, therefore, there is growth. That’s why I suck at math and economics, I guess.
But more importantly, the headlines form a perfect snippet of a stream-of-consciousness [...]

Two days, twelve bands.

This weekend’s festival served as a great introduction to Nashville’s music community. I’m going to keep track of the bands I see, sometimes with comments, sometimes not. I think it’ll be more of a record-keeping endeavor so I apologize for the lack of details. I had a lot more in this post and trashed it [...]

Fraught with music. Also, words I hate.

Busy week…stories, readings, dinners, drinks.
At some point Thursday through Saturday I’ll be hitting a music festival called Next Big Nashville. 200+ bands will be playing at venues throughout Nashville, usually 6-7 bands playing a venue on any given night. My main man Eef Barzelay will be at The Basement on Saturday night so that’s [...]

Story day. Let’s talk about penguins.

I have a story due this week, so in honor of creative enterprises everywhere (and because you’ll do most of the work) I thought we could work on another continuing story post. My hope is that you’ll come up with something wonderful and then I can steal the idea for my workshop.
If you’d like to [...]
