Nashville, the official Day 1.

I moved into my permanent apartment yesterday afternoon. I finally feel like I’m here. It hit me after I carried the last box up the stairs: I live in Nashville now. The temp place was cool, but I was living out of my suitcase so it felt like an extended stay hotel. Now I’m unpacked, [...]

For Pierre Colas.

Pierre Colas, an anthropology professor at Vanderbilt, was shot and killed in his East Nashville home Tuesday night. His sister Marie was also wounded and is in critical condition.
I didn’t have a chance to meet Colas. I work with one of his friends at the Writing Studio so I’ve seen up close how this has [...]

What goes around…

I believe (and have been advised) that it’s important to balance writing and academic work in an MFA program with activities outside of the program altogether. I’m guessing that my primary outlet will be the Nashville music scene, but that will have to wait until the early semester rush settles down. Too much going on [...]

This marked my first GPS-free trip from East Nashville [...]

Gas pump error in your favor.

Keeping it short today…forgot to add this to Monday’s post.
I’ve been feeling lucky lately, for various reasons. Somewhere around Atlanta (I’m not telling!) I stopped for gas and was disappointed to find gas at $3.78/gallon. I don’t know why I was expecting it to be cheaper. But a funny thing happened as I prepped my [...]

Off the road.

The drive to Nashville wasn’t too bad. Boring, but the miracle that is the iPod-connected car stereo cut down the monotony. I arrived at my temporary apartment, met some neighbors, and unpacked. On Sunday I played tourist and walked around campus and the surrounding area. It takes me forever to get my bearings. However, I [...]

On the road.

Well, almost. This is my last transmission from South Carolina. Today I’ll be packing up the car and preparing to head out first thing tomorrow morning. I’m not sure when I’ll be connected to the Internet tubes again; I hope to post a summary of Nashville impressions sometime soon.
I want to thank everyone who has [...]
